the best way is to just start with very basic things to gauge the maturity and level of your young players, start off with simple passing and basic touches. 1 technique for this is to form circles of between 6 and 8 players, then have them pass the ball round the circle, this will let you gauge their passing and control pretty quickly, next step i would do is to get them to dribble the ball in and out a line of cones, you could set up 2 lines and have them going slow to start with then go in a relay against each other. I would then progrss to practicing throw ins and headers. Headers are really important to get right, as some players seem to be wary of heading the ball, if you have some players thatwont head, then get them to balance the ball on their head and see how many times they can clap their hands in between placing the ball on their heads and it falling off. you can then progress to gettgin them to throw the ball up themselves and head it. these are just a few things to get you started anything else you would like to know just post and I will answer if I can.

steadman, coming from a playing background makes life a little easier, use the same warm ups and training exercises that you id, but just make it a bit more fun, if you keep training fun but disciplined then the players will come on leaps and bounds, try to encourage all players not just the best players, what i do is have a player of the week in training sessions, as well as man of the match for matches, I award player of the week to the person who has tried the hardest and listened to what i have asked of them, it may be that its the worst player, but if they have tried their hardest and shown improvement, and behaved themselves, then it gives them an incentive to strive to be a better player.

it can be, it really depends on your captain, if he likes to lead, then it may help for his team mates to see he has a sence of control, but I wouldnt put to much on him as the rest of the team could see him as to bossy. as for end of season awards, we normally have 3 trophies, top goalscorer, managers player of the year and players player of the year, this gives the rest of the team a chance to judge how each person has done in the season, in my opinion its the best 1 to recieve, and rarely do you get players nominating themselves. some of our managers also have a most improved trophy, but some see it as a case of well you was rubbish but your not so rubbish as you used to be.
