Ok here is my delemma, My girls U12 play competitive soccer in usa (maryland) I have been doing small sided games pretty much since i started coaching about 11 years which has worked for our kids but the team i have now do the games very good in practice, we do 4v4 to goals, we play keepaway from 3v2, 4v2, 3 team keepaway they do these games at 1 touch speed, but when we get into a game it seems that they forget how to play is there a way to get it related to the game.  I am going to start this week having them play on the field up and down the field to hopfully help them see where and when it can be used.

I divide the players into two teams, one team will be my back 4, plus a midfielder or two. They defend the goal.

The second team is the strikers, usually 2 and 4 midfielders with a couple of defenders, the attack.

I use half field, the attackers have to score and the defenders job is to clear the ball to two targets at centre near the sideline. I find this best replicates a game, gets the defenders to think about where they are clearing, the GK gets some work.

I can also coach teh attackers on width, depth, use of space and looking for the penetrating pass. One can also coach the defenders on communication, depth and shutting down of space.

I have a question ... do the players play different positions ... say after the half or next game or are they always playing the same position every time??

Hi Dave,

Patience! Patience! Patince! Did you expect your girls to adapt immediately? If you did, then dream on! Repetition is the solution. Then more repetition, then more rep..................!

Bear in mind that in competetive games you will no doubt be shouting instructions, as will team mates, as will parents and friends. In addition the other side is trying to combat your players and THEIR supporters and manager are adding to the confususion. To a young footballer this equates to CHAOS! Who do they respond to?

Sorry pal - there is no easy way. PATIENCE!
