| At the moment I am coach / manager of girls u13 side we play 11 a side I am trying to get the girls to get the ball down and pass to each other the trouble is we are playing against teams that seem to just kick it as far as poss and see what happens I think working on the idea if the ball is not near our goal they cannot score. At the moment we are loosing more games than winning How do I convince the girls, parents , myself this is the right way forward ?

| Stick to your guns 100%! I was in exactly the same situation especially as i had a lad who was like a whippet and had devastating pace so the general view was play him up front and just get it up and over to him as often as possible, instead i played him on the wing as i like wide play and traditional wingers and he fitted the bill perfectly, i could have just played him centre forward but that would have gone against what i wanted the team and individuals to achieve long term. That to me is a short fix and teaches nobody anything, no point in having a midfield if thats the way its going to be done! I like that teams play different ways and if the long ball does suit a team then fair play to them as if everyone did play the same way the game would be dull but what everyone needs to think about is the bigger picture, they may be struggling now but as soon as they get the gist of what your aiming for then the performances, results and confidence should improve. As coaches and managers we will all have our own style and way of doing things and if your way is to pass the ball then stick with it. What some people dont seem to realise is passing football isnt about lokking pretty or trying to be Brazil, ball retention is essential and the players use a lot less energy letting the ball do the work than chasing it and giving up possession all of the time. If they havent got the ball they cant score so in my eyes possession is key!!

| Thanks for that mate I think what pushed me over the edge to reexamine my principles was a mixture of work commitments and having to scrape together a team each week due holidays, injuries etc etc Mark

| One of the main ingredients which i'm sure you know anyway is communication and support play, to contradict that though a good game to play is a game of possession football where the players cant call for the ball so the player in possession has to look up and their team mates will realise they will have to be in a decent supporting position as they have to be clearly seen. Good luck with it!
