| I have been playing a 4-3-3 system for the last year. I play my midfielders in a triangle with responsibility for closing down the middle and forcing everything to the sidelines where they can trap the ball and cut down on the passing options. The problem I have is when we win the ball and start the attack the midefielders seem to get lost and not understand their responsbility on offense. We always end up with numbers down against the defense because our 3-forwards are the only ones up the field. Any thoughts or suggestions on how I can work on this in practice to link the mids on defense and offense more effectively? Thanks

| David, Dave Clarke (Soccer Coach Weekly ed) has a good drill in this week's issue. It doesn't exactly address your issue but you may find it helps. Have your forwards up front in amongst the defenders. Have your midfielders move forward with the ball. At the appropriate point get your forwards to move towards the midfielder with the ball. When they do this the defenders will follow them. The midfielder passes it to the forward who immediately returns it to the midfielder, and then spins off past the defender into the space created behind the defence. The midfielder can then pass into the space created for the forward to run onto. 1-0. Cheers

| Hi I have used a similar formation for my mens team, and will do so this season, 4-3-2-1, I have a flat back 4, with 3 midfielders left, centre, right, the midfield 3 play compact and try not to play to wide, I let the 2 players in front of them do the wide work and play a centre foward up through the centre.. ( hope you are following !! ) this is an experimental formation for my team and it seems to give me the following options!! The midfield 3 tend to up the work rate but if they get over run you can tell on of you front players to drop back and help out.. ( so you have 4 in the middle when defending) or drop the 2 players that play behind the striker into a 5 man midfield on goal kicks!! the passing becomes shorter and sharper as the players seem to be more compact and closer together. if one of the front players pulls wide I get one of the midfield players to push through the centre to become another striker on the attack! its a strange formation but and I have onely used it a couple of times but it seems to work... but again.. im not an expert!! Cheers
Cheers
