Does anyone have any recomendations on how best to approach companies for team sponsorship to purchase new kit?
Any suggested letters / emails?
Is it best to ask for an amount or let them offer?
Any help would be appreciated.

Not much help for you so far. I hope this is. This is what I did.
I just searched for local business, prioritised by relevance to football and locality, and started making phone calls.
I was amazed just how helpful most were. If they could not do a kit, they have helped with event activities, adverts, freebies etc. Hardly any calls were wasted.
That said, my potential sponsor did eventually let me down, and two Dads stepped in with offers. The money is tax deductable, so if a compamny is paying tax, they can do this at no cost.
The amount really set itself, number of players, plus a couple of spre, x kit cost. 3 quotes, and pick the best supplier for the sponsor. We have 30 kits, inc raintops, cost <£1500.
