In training you should encourage each boy to play in all positions as a defender playing in midfield will get more of the ball and become more confident on the ball in latter years but just become a stopper but a cultured centre half.

We always try to play 5v5 one goalkeepers then four outfield players playing in a diamond and each player must spend time in each position. many good fb in professional football started off as wingers in is too early to say he is a defender and forward before 13,14 years old

AI think that all of the points are valid; but think that some children can be naturally gifted in a position.

This sums it up for me.

We don't really coach them to BECOME anything. MOST players will fall into the position they feel most comfortable playing in and feel they can do their best.

All players will find their own happy place as it were, so let them try all positions. Move everyone around for the reasons already stated. And try everyone out in goal. For example, when a player discovers he has a real talent for being a keeper, he will seldom want to leave the sticks. If they want to try and be a striker, let them try a couple of times. If they don't enjoy it, they will soon stop asking and they can go on to find the position they like best.

I coach a U9 boys team.   I typically start off the game with what I feel is my "best" lineup.    Most of last season we didn't have any subs so the players

would occasionally shift between offense/defense to get a rest.   I typically start off the second half with what I know is not my best lineup but what will give the kids the opportunity to learn a new position.  I feel it will make them more "well rounded" players.   If nothing else, when they go tryout for a team with 6 strikers, they can say that they have experience playing other positions as well.

On a side note, we typically give up way more goals in the 2nd half then we do in the first.  I'm willing to give up goals and potential wins if it keeps the kids developing and challanges them to learn new stuff.
