My 9 year old Son is predominantly doing extensive fitness training and hardly any skills training at his football training sessions including extensive sit ups and push ups and large amounts of running, which means some days hes in agony for the few days following.  I would like your opinion on whether you think this is right for a team of 9/10 year olds as he is naturally fit but lacking in football skills at the moment and his team keep losing which is disheartening for them.

At this age over training with fitness - particularly strength conditioning exercises are likely to produce long term problems for the kids as their bodies are still growing and developing and as such should not be over conditioned as it can cause long term muscular and bone development problems. I am no Dr but do teach Biology as well as coach junior teams.
Short sprints and even the occasional longer run to develop stamina are not a problem unless overdone - but strength work on any part of the body is best done by low impact stuff such as joining a swimming club!
From a different point of view - its really boring doing that stuff all the time anyway and no way to coach juniors. With my current under 8s I have primarily focused on skills development, ball control and quick feet - this helps develop foot/eye coordination and is (in my view) essential for later progress as a player. All my players can demonstrate to varying degrees of skill at least 6 turns and around a further 10 foot skills with both feet. This means they are all confident when the ball arrives at their feet and are not frightened of winning it in the first place cos they know they can do something with it. This year we have worked much more on passing and positions and this coming off-season we will now work more on shooting and finishing including getting into the correct position.
This season we have lost as many games as we have won but we have always produced plenty of chances - I would expect to score more of these next season!
Many teams work on shooting first and wonder why the kids cant create the chances in the first place.
Anyway - that's my opinion but I hope it gives you something to think about...

You are absolutely right Wilko!! 9 yr means he is very young and at this age their muscles are not enough to bare such a large pressure and exercises. It will be affect his health in future. You make take advice from a kid health instructor..

I would put him in another team ASAP as i believe that as already said by the others it will do him more harm than good and what can be very important years for a young player is being wasted.

On the flip side though when players get to 13/14 then the fitness side of it can teach good habits and instill a healthy work ethic (in a football NOT job sense) as much as actually gain fitness which at those ages comes naturally anyway.

I certainly would say though that before the ages of 12/13 then apart from warm up techniques which again instill good habits then fitness work really is irrelavent especially nonsense like push ups (why is a coach getting 9 year olds to do that?????????????)

I will say though certain drills without a ball which could be interpreted as fitness do improve technique and coordination (eg speed ladders and small hurdles etc)
