Hi.

I'm curious what 6v6 formations anyone can recommend?  We've played indoor all winter 7v7 and are now moving outdoors and that's 6v6 including the goalie.  We've been playing currently with a 3-2-1 plus goalie.  It's a young team and they need manpower to help keep the ball in the attacking zone.   We currently play our defenders marked up as far as the opposing team with our center defense hanging back a little - but not too much.  These are U10 girls - and its their first time playing travel outdoors.  What are some good formations that would help us out?

Thanks!

Melissa

A lot depends on the individual girls and their abilities. Some formations we've used with our U10 Girls 6v6 (from the back-forward):

  • 3-2  This is straightforward, but you need to be careful that this doesn't turn out to be long ball playing.
  • 2-1-2 This pushes the CD up into a more midfielder role. Good if you have midfielders that can play end-to-end.
  • 1-2-2 This is good if you have a very strong, fast defender that can play as sweeper. Can work well on transition if the sweeper is reliable and the players keep up with the game. You can attack with 4 easily and fall back with 3 on defense.

These are all flexible in that if you have the players aware of support and cover, you can push up on the wings or you can play through the middle. Typically with 6v6 girls you really need some good firepower to get forward. If you are only attacking with 1 or 2 players you will have a hard time scoring.
