| For me, support play in any sized game is all about creating width and depth and continuously making intelligent runs off the ball. Players have to be taught that no matter where they are on the pitch while their team is in possession, they do effect play. Ask players off the ball, "What can you do to help us penetrate this defense?" In 4v4, I tend to use the 1-2-1 diamond formation with the forward and defender doing the lion's share of working the spine. This gives the flank players the freedom to make runs to stretch the defense. Done properly these runs will either draw defenders away from the possession player, or if the defender stays put, the runner will have created space for himself to receive the ball. Also, players must not be afraid to play the ball back to negative space. This requires good communication and understanding though. Playing it back a bit to keep possession is better than forcing it forward and giving the ball away. One 4v4 game condition I put on for my lads requires that at least three of the four attackers must be in the attacking half of the pitch in order for any end product to count (whether its a shot on goal, endline control, ball to a target player, whatever). This forces players to provide support, and it is great for fitness as they are forced to play "box to box" albeit in a SSG. Give them the analogy that a rope of many fibres is stronger that one of one strand. The more of them there are working together, the stronger the attack. Hope this helps.
If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.
