| My 12 year old son plays for a irish league academy team at under 13's,he's a great passer of the ball ,plays centre midfield but he has one problem he wont tackle anybody,he just runs beside them and can only get the ball of them if they stop moving for a moment. I've tried to talk to him about it ,but I really dont know how to give him advice are show him how to approach tackling someone. In training he tackles sort of ok but not great. Any ideas would be helpful. Also should 12's be taught tactics as part of there training, I mean like of the ball movement, positional play etc.

| I think confidence plays a big part in tackling. There are correct techniques which can be sourced from any coaching manual. The player does need to have the willingness though to put himself in a "physical challenge2"which can be an issue for younger players. I would start by putting a dead ball at the base of a cone and getting him to take the ball off the cone and keep control of it. This will get him used to the technique of trying to win the ball correctly. The same with sliding tackles i would have him sliding into win a deadball with no obstructions - again just to get him used to the technique. You could then move it on with getting another player/parent or coach to replicate as before with a still ball at there feet then advance it to the player with the ball walking then jogging. There is no rush with this and if he has other good attributes like his passing then he has a base to work off and he can keep his confidence up by working on the parts he is comfortable with after working on the stuff he struggles with. If he drops his head by working on the things he doesnt like and may struggle with it can be lifted again by working on the drills he is comfortable with and can excel at....again its all about building and maintaining confidenceof playing the game and keeping him enthusiastic. As far as positional and tactical play is concerned i do not see any harm in this being taught from any age group. There are priorities like technique etc but for a fuller understanding of the game then it can only benefit a player. There is so much more to the game than just ball work. So for a more complete player i believe every aspect should be looked at with and without the ball!!

| there're sliding tackle, block tackle, toe poke. or stealing the ball.. not everytime player need to use sliding tackle.. maybe what refering or you want from your son is to be more chanllenging and play more aggressively. naturally young players offen use stealing the ball, toe poke away the ball or block tackle b4 sliding tackle.. one of the reason why young player rarely use sliding tackle is lack of physical abilities.. ( strength, flexibility, agility, balance, power etc.. ) they find it hard to get their body down to tackle. but when they improve their physical abilities, naturally they will be playing more aggressively and start to use sliding tackle more.. one of the good way in chanllenging and tackling is (1) if attacker with the ball, defender close him up quickly by using short and quick step ( alway use short and quick step to chanllenge for ball ). if the attacker is not in full control of the ball, chanllenge him by using stealing, block tackle or toe poke the ball away. (2) if the attacker is in full control of the ball, still approach him quickly, but be careful, need to slow down b4 reaching him, don't commit yourself by simply charging in him. jockey, on the toe balance and apply disguise tackle ( pretent to tackle ) to force the attacker to commit himself by dribbling the ball to the right or left side. or even lose control with the ball. that is the time the defender can do a stealing. if cant, toe poke away the ball or even do a sliding tackle. REMENBER! all the movment need to do it quick.. of course 12 year old need to know how to play off the ball movment and simple positioning play! all you need to do is to let your son train in a good team, under a good coach. good coach know what to do!

| individual defending skill 1 v 1.. 1) approach ( approach the attacker quickly when the ball is in flight ) 2) contain, jockey. ( defending stance ) and get the rythem 3) pretent to tackle ( jerking forward and backward ) or chennel the attacker to one side ( making play more predictable ) 4) if the attacker lose control with the ball, steal the ball or tackle ( toe poke, block tackle or sliding tackle ) if not, keep provide pressure to the attacker. ( REMENBER! do it quick by using short and quick step, focus, concentration  . *** and still need to practise ball intercepting skill as well.
