| A lot of people in the British media blame England's abject failure to qualify for the Euros on shortcomings in grassroots coaching. Anyone care to comment?

| Back in the 1980's I saw a study that was done to try and figure out why the USA's team could not win against European teams. The one figure that jumped out at me was finishing, or the number of scoring chances it took to score a goal. The US team scored about 1 or two times per 10 scoring chances. The European teams scored about 5 or 6 times per 10 scoring chances. When I watch EPL games now, I can't help but notice that 6 out of 10 scoring chances are shot high over the crossbar. I don't know if this is a byproduct of the new balls that are being used or just poor technique, but I would say that if you change this fact back to the 5 or 6 goals per 10 chances, you would do a lot better. Two things I coach my players on; you may only get one chance to score in a game so make it count, and nobody ever complained about shooting too low! Coach Newell, Alaska

| Hi Dwyer, I personally believe if we had held onto that draw last week however poor we were there would not be any of this over analysing. Top proffesionals did not perform and the effort and work rate were dire. I am not Mclarens biggest fan but the likes of Gerrard etc shouldnt need a manager for motivation for such games, the players were simply not good enough ON THE NIGHT!! Its the same as all this fuss on shapes etc, yes Crouch was isolated but only because Gerrard, Lampard etc were poor, if they had played well the shape would not have made a blind bit of difference - again over analysing. Mclaren was never the right man, i live in the same village as a top FA representetive and on passing one day i said i believed in Allardyce simply because he would have been a breath of fresh air and not just a continuation of Erikkssons reign which Mclaren obviously was but still these players are proffesionals, if any of the current England squad turned up at any training sessions at the kind of standard we all work at everyone would listen to every word they say...yet when it comes down to it there performance lets them down, not because of too many foriegners or systems or grass roots but simply a couple of bad showings. We need to stop being so dramatic and over analysing get some organisation into the team and we will be as good as anyone, the likes of Terry, Ferdinand, Gerrard, Owen, Rooney would get into any team in the world so lets all stop panicking except this time we failed and just gwet our heads up and qualify for the world cup. All this "havent won anything since 66" what about teams like Spain - not won anything but they arent running around all flustered they just go into each tournament trying to win...only one team can win so every tournament should every other country analyze the way they do everything. Our league is the best and our team is capable of being as good as anyone so lets all just calm down and concentrate on qualifying for South Africa 2010.

I think there's a combination of issues. I don't think there's a huge issue with grassroots, maybe that the quality of coaching should be better but that will come with time, at least the kids are playing football. There's a distinct lack left footers so we are very one sided. Play wingers and get inswinging crosses on one side (or none) and out swining from the other. It's not just grass roots, when you join a big club, the promise is there but the big clubs need results now so they purchase ready made instead of nurturing youth. Tactics are a big issue, you are either a team that is so good, your one tactic against any team works or you have such a versatile team that you can switch tactics, the team gel and beat the opposition. Sadly we are neither. The England team needs a good tactitian who can motivate the players.
Cheers
Coach Sandy

Dear Dwyer. I think the English media is at somewhat to blame for England poor showing in so many competitions!. The reason being is they put so much pressure on the coach he feels obliged to pick certain players. If a keeper is having a few good games they all jump on the band wagon saying he should be given a chance to prove himself. I agree young blood should be given a chance but isn't that the reason why we have friendlies to see how they handle the pressure of being an England player. Also we have several good natural left footed players but every coach seems to ignore them and put a right footed player in their place. If the media did the job they were payed for ( writing about how good or bad England play games) instead of being a part time manager and picking the teams perhaps the manager or coach could do his job.
