Traditionally my club has had tryouts for all age levels from U10s and up.  In the past they have done a skill session in additon to several game tryouts.  This year when I said that I thought that the skills scores did little to help me place children onto one of four teams, my opinion was loudly drowned out and I was told that I needed to have skills sessions.  By big beef is that the drills that we have used in the past seem to be very static.  Does anyone have any suggestions on drills that could be valuable in a skills tryout?

I dont know much skills that could really guide you to how to pick as many kids are better in game situations.

I watched a dvd about kids in brazil and professional teams like flamenco etc have tryouts every year where kids from all over brazil come down to try out for their youth teams.

They just had matches because they believe that they can tell more about someone during a game as during training you cant express yourself as much.

What they did do is they kept switching players between teams until they had what they believed was the right team.

I know this sound all too basic but some kids and adults try harder than others in training and that doesnt mean that they are or will become better players. Just look at ronaldo, he looks very lazy but he does the job of scoring goals better than most.

Its just another option for you, but im sure there are many more ways you can go about it.

Apart from enthusiasm and a willingness to learn i look at players attitudes as much as anything else.

Doing a skill session in my opinion is pointless in a trial, although it boils down to what as a manager you are looking for?! You could have a player who struggles with skills but is naturally competive and good in the tackle or at heading for instance. They could in theory be over looked, yet once that player joins your team you can work on anything they lackover a period of weeks which isnt possible in one trial session.

Match situations tell you a lot more about their interaction within a team and their willingness to work within a team.

I hold trials every summer and i start like a normal training session with a gentle jog then stretches then move onto running drills (e.g shuttles) then move onto basic dribbling / passing routines then allocate a decent hour or so for a full match or two smaller sided games.

As i said i like a good attitude and a good work rate apart from a basic ability and understanding of the game so all of the above drills tell me what i need to know.

Please remember though i work with older players (16,17,18 year olds) although i dont think the the necarsarry attributes differ too much with age but you obviously have to allow for their development at a younger age.
