Attack in waves soccer coaching drill
Coaching soccer players to attack in waves is as much about the mind as the skills and technique. How often do you see players with their head in their hands when they lose the ball and the opposition defenders running away to counter attack. Players need to be able to react immediately to the next opportunity to attack.
The aim of this soccer drill session is to get attackers creating opportunities and finding the determination to get into the box and score. What you want to do is encourage the movement, reactions and understanding of the three attackers. You are trying to get them to create chances, to lose defenders and score from crosses.
Set up the soccer drill as in the diagram, using a 30 yard x 20 yard pitch.
The coach passes into the three attackers.
The attackers must combine quickly in order to pass out wide. The wide player crosses. The attackers then make runs into the box and attempt to score from the cross.
Develop the soccer drill
Add defenders to the drill session. Now the attackers must try to lose the defenders in order to score. If successful, they receive a second ball from the coach and attack the opposite end.
However, if they are not successful they must defend while the defenders attack.
