Soccer coaching fitness drill with passing and turning

Use this simple exercise of pass and turn in threes for a soccer coaching session when you want to work on your players' fitness levels.

Soccer fitness drills with passing and turning

Soccer drill set up

  • In this soccer drill two end players should be directly opposite each other 20 yards apart. A third player should be in the middle.
  • Use five pairs of cones, spaced five yards apart, so that players can move into position easier, know exactly what to do and can concentrate on their technique rather than think about where they have to move to.
  • Each end player needs a ball.

Run the drill

  • On your command, the player in the middle calls for the ball then runs to receive it between the cones at the five-yard mark. The end player should be passing the ball on the player's shout with the right weight so it reaches the player's feet at the right time.
  • The middle player controls the ball and passes it back. As soon as they make the return pass, they turn and run towards the other end player. They should be calling for the ball when they get back to the middle to receive it at the same position but at the opposite end.
  • The middle player must continue running back and forth, receiving and passing balls. They should be running at pace and trying to maintain good speed and quality touches. As players get tired, make sure passes do not go astray.
  • You should run the drill for 30 seconds, then the middle player switches with one of the end players. Continue the drill until all three players have been the runner in the centre.
  • Make the drill competitive by seeing which group can complete the most passes in one and a half minutes – each of the three players has a 30-second workout.
