Soccer defending drill

Defending exercises can be boring for your players as they have to concentrate on angles and positions, and they have to keep stopping to explain. For a fun alternative to the usual defending practice, try this soccer (football) drill which gives players a good attack versus defence workout

This soccer drill helps ensure that players are working on the pitch at different angles, speeds and levels of fatigue due to the attack that has just taken place.

Use an area 25 yards by 25 yards with goals on three sides, plus balls and cones

How to play it

  • With goals on three sides of the pitch, the teams defend the goal occupied by their goalkeeper and attack the goal they are facing.
  • The black team attacks the white team opposite. The black team then defends against the grey team, the grey team  defends against the white team.
  • Play for a set time and rotate the teams to start in each position.
