Soccer coaching drill to get defenders reacting quickly
Your young football (soccer) players' awareness on the pitch can be heightened by the use of training drills encouraging them to get involved in situations where they have to make choices and cover more than one option.
To improve these basic football (soccer) skills, use the following soccer coaching session, which forces defenders to communicate and defend quickly, reacting to situations where they must support their team-mates after each ball is played.

How to set up the defending skills soccer drill
- Mark out a 30 yards by 30 yards playing area with a goal at one end, and a goalkeeper.
- Each attacker needs a ball in this soccer drill.
How to run the soccer drill
- You need three defenders in front of the goal and three attackers to advance.
- The three defenders must react to various attacks consisting of different numbers of players and balls: For example, one attacker with one ball. Two attackers with two balls. Three attackers with three balls.
- How do the defenders react to the different situations?
- After the attacks are complete, count the goals scored and rotate the teams.
