High energy coaching tips
The soccer (football) coach is the leader of the team in more ways than one. Your young players will feed off your moods, which can either motivate or have a negative effect on their behaviour. So improve your team's motivation with these high-energy coaching tips.
If you are turning up to football training in a bad mood or feel you “can't be bothered”, the children will pick up on this and copy your mood. This makes it hard to motivate young players. To maintain your motivation, think about different ways to increase the enthusiasm of you and your players.
Motivate and energise!
Children can take their behavioural cues from the ways adults act around them. They will respond to you by mimicking your actions, so try to maintain your personal levels of energy.
Here are four methods I use to help energise my coaching:
- Though I would love to get involved in a game, my participation is confined to running with the players in the warm up drill. The players enjoy me taking part in training, but it is only safe to join in non-competitive exercises.
- I remember the positive reasons why I decided to start coaching in the first place.
- I focus on making a difference to the players today. It only takes a small change in a player’s understanding of the game to represent an achievement.
- I feed off the most enthusiastic player and respond to them.
