Defending football drill with changing numbers of attackers
In this soccer coaching drill session, defenders learn how to cope with situations where they have different numbers of attackers running at them. In some situations they will have the advantage in player numbers. But in others they will be outnumbered by the attackers.
For this defending football drill, set up a 30 yards by 30 yards area. You need three defenders, five attackers, a goal and a goalkeeper.

Run defending soccer drill
The three defenders must defend against five attacks. After facing only one attacker in the first move, an additional attacker is added in subsequent attacks. The running order should be:
- 3v1 – defender’s advantage
- 3v2 – defender’s advantage
- 3v3 – equal
- 3v4 – attacker’s advantage
- 3v5 – attacker’s advantage
Key soccer coaching tips for defending drill
- The defenders should start by pressing as a group and become more patient and tactical (defending high and together) as more attackers enter the game.
- Once the five attacks are complete in this soccer coaching session, count the goals scored and select three new defenders to try out their skills.
