Coach your soccer team by example
As a soccer (football) coach, you are a leader, the person your players look up to, and the one they will copy. One thing you must do to set a good example to your players and their parents is show respect to the officials on match day.
Coach by example
When you feel annoyed and your team are all looking across at you because they feel cheated by a difficult decision from the ref, smile across at the players and tell them to forget the incident and accept what the referee or their assistants have said.
If you’re struggling to control yourself in a stressful situation, walk away from the side of the pitch, and take deep breaths, count to 50, then get back to the action.
As a referee myself and as someone who is often assistant referee, I can tell you that being assistant referee is quite a difficult job. At all levels of the game you have split seconds to make decisions.
Assistant referees are usually dads who help out. Sometimes they get it wrong, you just have to accept this.
