Sweeper soccer drill
There's a lot going on in this soccer coaching drill session. Players are involved in communication, tactics, passing, tackling and 1v1s.
You need to keep a keen eye on what is going on in this soccer sweeper drill, so you can coach your players and give them help if they are struggling to communicate.

Soccer drill set up
- Set up a 60x30 yard area and cone off two end zones 10 yards in from each end.
- You need two goals and two goalkeepers.
Run the soccer drill
- One player on each team is nominated to be the defensive “sweeper”. This player goes into the end zone and must communicate to their team-mates.
- The soccer (football) drill session begins with the coach passing to one of the teams.
- The sweeper provides verbal support to their team-mates. “Get tight,” “Someone support,” “Get goal side”, “Show inside” etc.
- If the attacking team gets past their opponent’s defence, the sweeper must become active in a 1v1 situation.
- All players should have a turn as the sweeper.
