Soccer coaching tips to help retain respect of players

Use the following seven soccer coaching tips and tactics to ensure that you retain the respect of your young soccer (football) players.

  1. Never apologise for the soccer coaching session or soccer (football) drill you are going to run.

  2. Never admit to the team that you are nervous, even if you are feeling it.

  3. Listen to your players' opinions, but have the final say.

  4. If you want to be in charge, then be the best prepared soccer coach you can be.

  5. Either very harsh or very lax discipline will undo the morale of the players.

  6. Consistency in all areas of your soccer coaching helps maintain team morale. Try to praise each player at some time, but avoid being too gushing. It's not a good idea to say “That was fantastic, guys!” when your players were under-performing.

  7. Shouting and over-criticism will rarely improve morale or discipline, but neither will letting misdemeanours go unnoticed.
