Soccer coaching tips to help your team captain

Coach your team captain to manage effectively with the following soccer coaching tips and advice.

The ability to communicate well is a skill required by all soccer (football) captains. The captain needs to encourage and manage on-field communication between all the players, as well as maintaining effective communication both with players and between players and the coaching staff off the pitch.

Captain's responsibilities

  • The captain should look and listen for the coach during the game. This is especially important during stoppages in play. The coach may notice something that needs to be altered or may want to change the team formation.

  • It is up to the captain to notice the soccer coach and to make any adjustments they wish to make.

  • A captain should also greet any new players that enter the game. This is good for more than just morale, as that player may have a message to deliver from the soccer coach.

  • Captains have to set examples, both in matches and in training.
