Passing in twos soccer warm down drill
As a soccer warm-up or a warm-down drill at the end of a training session, I often get my players to run up the pitch passing in twos, playing the ball in front of each other to run on to.
I sometimes time the players to put a bit of extra pressure on their passing and add a competitive edge. This soccer (football) drill is an effective way of getting across coaching points involving control and accurate passing skills.

Soccer drill set up
Get your soccer players in twos and have them line up in their pairs behind the half-way line. On your command they need to pass their way up the pitch with angled passes for each other to run on to.
The passing has to be accurate otherwise the players will have to stop running or speed up to get the ball. You want to see steady running with passes laid off into the path of the player so he doesn’t have to break his stride. You also want to see good first touch to control the ball and then pass.
Advance the soccer drill
- Tell your players they can only use one-touch passing.
- Add more players or obstacles to pass around - you could make it into passing between three players, or add defenders that the players must pass past.
- Add a goalkeeper to finish the movement off with a shot at goal.
